How Long do after school practices last?
All after school rehearsals end at 3:20 PM. Students need to be picked up, or sent to OASIS by 3:30 PM.
What are the other time commitments (outside of rehearsal)
We have two concerts a year, one on January 24, 2023 (at 7:00 PM), and one on May 9, 2023 (at 6:00 PM). Also, each student is encouraged to practice for 100 minutes a week (20 minutes/ 5 days a week).
In the past we have also had optional "parties" for social bonding. These are not required, but a fun way to get to know the people in our band! Each child will pay their own admission to these parties.

My Child has no musical background, can she still play in band?
Absolutely! We start from square one. Each child will learn how to hold, put together, and make sound on their instrument. They will then learn each note, one at a time.
What if I work and can't pick my child up by 3:30?
We have a program here at Ludwig called OASIS that is run through the park district. Students can sign up for this for the days they need to stay late. There are also many carpooling opportunities!
How much does it cost to join band?
Instrument prices vary by instrument and by condition (new vs used) and brand. Visit Quinlan and Fabish's website for more information about renting instruments and their easy "rent-to-own" process. Keep in mind the final price of the instrument is NOT listed on their webpage, only the monthly rental cost. For the final purchase price for instruments, please contact the store directly at 800.63.SOUSA , or email Mrs. Danley or Mrs. Nommensen.
You can also shop around at other stores such as Treble Clef, PM Music, or Ellman's Music, etc.
Please do NOT purchase an instrument from ebay or from a big box store. Remember a good rule of thumb is, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Are there other costs beside the price of the instrument?
There are other supplies your student will need, but many of them are a one time purchase or a purchase that only needs to be made when they run out. For example, Brass players will receive a tube slide grease and/or bottle of valve oil. These generally last a player two years before they need to be replaced. Woodwind players will need reeds. A box of reeds will last typically about 8-12 months (possibly less at the beginning as they're learning how to take care of them). Percussionists will want to purchase a stick bag, mallets, and drum sticks, and periodically will need additional or replacement sticks/mallets.
All students will also need a practice stand (approximately $16), and a Tradition of Excellence band method book ($11 for wind players, $13 for percussion players).
